Ground beetles are a large family of beetles with more than 40,000 species worldwide, around 2,000 of which are found in North America and 2,700 in Europe. Ground beetles are recognized by their long legs and shiny elytra (wing covers). In many species the hind wings are reduced or absent, and tend to run rather than fly when disturbed. At night they emerge from under rocks, crevices, or litter to predate on insects, worms, or snails with their sharp projecting mouthparts. Their larvae are long and slender and are mostly carnivorous. Many ground beetles secrete a foul-smelling liquid that discourages predation.
